Icon files are awkward to work with: most editors won't open them, and the artwork inside is locked into fixed sizes. Extracting to PNG gives you a normal image you can inspect, recolour or rebuild a modern icon set from.
ICO is a container that holds several icon sizes in one file. Browsers still reach for favicon.ico, and Windows uses it for application and shortcut icons.
The largest image stored in the ICO is extracted with transparency intact. Because ICO only ever holds small, pre-rendered sizes, the PNG cannot be sharper than the source — 256×256 is usually the ceiling.
What you gain with PNG: Lossless quality, an alpha channel for transparency and universal support in every browser and operating system.
Drop your ICO file above and Morphio decodes it locally, then re-encodes it as PNG using WebAssembly + the browser's native codecs. Nothing is ever uploaded — your files stay on your device. Batch as many files as your machine can handle. See exactly how in-browser conversion works.
Open the ICO to PNG page, drop your image on the drop zone and press convert. Morphio runs an in-browser image pipeline built on Canvas and WebAssembly codecs, so the ICO data never leaves your device and no server ever receives a copy.
Colour profile and pixel dimensions are preserved; you choose the quality level before the file is written. Converting ICO to PNG only rewrites the container and encoding you asked for — the source file on your disk is never modified.
Yes. The free plan covers 10 conversions a day with files up to 200 MB and adds no watermark or sign-up. Morphio Pro ($5/month, or $29 once for lifetime access) removes the daily cap and raises the per-file limit to 5 GB.
The largest variant packed into the file, which is typically 256×256 in modern icons and 48×48 in older ones.
Not without softening. If you need a bigger version, rebuild the artwork as SVG.
