Animated GIFs are absurdly inefficient — a three-second loop can outweigh the entire rest of a page. Animated WebP keeps the same loop and the same transparency but encodes it with a modern codec, often at a fifth of the size.
GIF is a 256-colour format from 1987 that survived because it loops short animations without a video player. Its palette limit makes it poor for photos and heavy for long clips.
Size drops of 60–85% are typical, and the colour banding GIF forces on gradients disappears because WebP is not limited to 256 colours. The animation timing and loop behaviour carry across unchanged.
What you gain with WEBP: Noticeably smaller pages, transparency and animation in one format, supported by every current browser.
Drop your GIF file above and Morphio decodes it locally, then re-encodes it as WEBP using WebAssembly + the browser's native codecs. Nothing is ever uploaded — your files stay on your device. Batch as many files as your machine can handle. See exactly how in-browser conversion works.
Open the GIF to WEBP page, drop your image on the drop zone and press convert. Morphio runs an in-browser image pipeline built on Canvas and WebAssembly codecs, so the GIF data never leaves your device and no server ever receives a copy.
Colour profile and pixel dimensions are preserved; you choose the quality level before the file is written. Converting GIF to WEBP only rewrites the container and encoding you asked for — the source file on your disk is never modified.
Yes. The free plan covers 10 conversions a day with files up to 200 MB and adds no watermark or sign-up. Morphio Pro ($5/month, or $29 once for lifetime access) removes the daily cap and raises the per-file limit to 5 GB.
Yes — animated WebP holds all frames, timing and looping, so the result plays exactly like the GIF.
Many email clients still only animate GIF. For web pages WebP is the better choice; for newsletters, keep the GIF.
